On February 6, 2026, the U.S. FDA announced an amendment to the color additive regulations to allow spirulina as a color additive in food and beverages at levels consistent with good manufacturing practice (GMP). As of March 25, 2026, the FDA issued a Federal Register notice indefinitely delaying the effective date for this expansion pending a review of the objections, and a hearing, where requested. This expansion would enable spirulina to be used across food and beverages at GMP, with minimal exceptions such as infant formula.
This is exciting news for brands and developers seeking to replace FD&C Blue 1, as spirulina is an excellent shade match in many applications.
